SEO for law firms and attorneys

Every search for «lawyer + city» that doesn’t find you goes to a competitor — or straight to a directory listing. SEO for law firms means being the answer when someone needs legal help and turns to Google first.

In short

What law firm SEO involves

Law firm SEO is the work of making a firm the answer when someone searches for legal help — «divorce lawyer near me», «what to do after a car accident», «employment solicitor» plus a city. In practice it comes down to three things: a Google Business Profile that wins the local map results, one strong page per practice area, and content that shows real legal expertise rather than generic copy.

  • 01One page per practice area. Personal injury, family, employment and criminal defence are different searches with different clients; a single «our services» page competes for none of them.
  • 02A Google Business Profile that wins the map. Most legal searches show the local map results first: categories, reviews, photos and consistent contact details decide who appears there.
  • 03Location pages that say something real. If you serve several cities, each page needs its own substance — courts, local procedures, the matters you handle there — not the same text with the city name swapped.
  • 04Answers to the questions clients ask before they call. «How long does probate take», «can I be fired for…»: informational content is where trust starts, and it is what AI answer engines quote.
  • 05Visible credentials. Attorney bios with bar admissions, education and experience: Google treats legal content as «Your Money or Your Life», and so do prospective clients.
  • 06Clean technical foundations. Fast pages on mobile, correct LegalService and Person structured data, and no duplicate pages competing with each other.
The rules

How advertising rules shape law firm SEO

Legal marketing is regulated, and SEO content counts as advertising. The details vary by jurisdiction, but the principles are consistent:

  • 01Nothing false or misleading. In the US, ABA Model Rule 7.1 — adopted in some form by state bars — applies to every page, case result and review you publish.
  • 02Careful with «specialist» and «expert». Many states restrict claiming to be a specialist unless certified by an approved body.
  • 03Case results need context. Past outcomes don’t guarantee future ones, and several states require a disclaimer saying so.
  • 04In England and Wales, price transparency is mandatory for certain services: SRA rules require firms offering services such as conveyancing, probate or employment tribunal claims to publish pricing information on their website.

These are general principles I build into the content from the start, not legal advice: your state bar or the SRA remains the reference for your specific situation.

The problem

The challenges specific to law firm SEO

  • 01Professional conduct rules — legal advertising has specific constraints on what can be communicated and how, a factor unlike almost any other sector
  • 02Local SEO as an absolute priority — most legal searches carry local intent, and the Google Business Profile listing matters as much as the site itself
  • 03E-E-A-T as a top priority — Google applies real scrutiny to legal content, and credibility has to be built on genuine expertise, not keyword-stuffed pages
  • 04Clear practice area segmentation — optimising for a generic «lawyer» search wastes the opportunity to capture higher-intent, specific searches

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is law firm SEO?

It is the work of making a law firm visible on Google — and in AI answer engines — when people search for legal help: a strong Google Business Profile for local searches, one page per practice area, content that answers clients’ questions, and a technically clean website.

How long does SEO take for a law firm?

The first movement in local results usually shows up in 3-6 months. Competitive practice areas in large cities, such as personal injury, take longer: twelve months or more is a realistic horizon, and anyone promising page one in weeks is selling something else.

How much does law firm SEO cost?

It depends on the number of practice areas and locations and on how competitive your market is. My hourly rate for consulting and audits is on the homepage; the first audit is free, and ongoing work is quoted after it.

Is SEO better than Google Ads for lawyers?

They do different jobs. Ads buy visibility immediately and stop when the budget stops — and legal clicks are among the most expensive there are. SEO takes longer but keeps working; many firms run ads while organic visibility builds, then shift budget as it grows.

Do I need a new website first?

Not always. An audit shows whether the current site can be fixed; if it can’t, web design for law firms covers the rebuild.

Can you work with a firm outside Italy?

Yes: the work is done remotely, and local SEO follows the same principles wherever the firm is based. What changes is the regulatory framework, which I check at the start for your jurisdiction.
