How many Google reviews do you need? What the data on 1,353 profiles says
The review count beyond which it stops paying to chase more, the rating threshold that really matters, and how to ask customers with your review link.

«How many reviews do I need?» is one of the questions I hear most. The usual answer is «more than your competitors». With data from my study on local SEO and AI you can say something more precise: I compared 1,353 Google Business Profiles across 23 business categories in Catania, Sicily, and the surrounding towns with the answers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google gave to 352 questions.
How many Google reviews you need: the curve
Share of profiles cited by at least two AI engines, by number of reviews:
| Reviews on the profile | Profiles | Cited by at least two AI engines |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 9 | 401 | 9% |
| 10 to 49 | 389 | 22% |
| 50 to 199 | 338 | 33% |
| 200 to 999 | 149 | 41% |
| 1,000 and more | 76 | 34% |
Holding rating, Maps position, category and website equal, every doubling of your reviews is worth about 19% higher odds of being cited. But the curve flattens around 200 reviews: beyond that the advantage stops growing (profiles with more than 1,000 reviews are even cited slightly less).
In practice:
- Under 10 reviews you are nearly invisible to AI, and to many customers: in the US, 47% won’t choose a business with fewer than 20 reviews (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 10 to 50 puts you in the game. Every extra review counts a lot.
- 50 to 200 is the good range. Keep going, steadily.
- Over 200 the number stops making the difference: rating, profile completeness and website matter more.
Rating: the threshold is 4.8, not 5.0
What counts is clearing 4.8: everything else equal, it is worth about 41% higher odds. A 5.0 does no better than a 4.8, because 5.0 profiles almost always have few reviews. A 4.8 with 150 reviews beats a 5.0 with 8.
How much they weigh for each AI engine
| Engine | Reviews, per doubling | Rating of at least 4.8 |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | +37% | 3 times the odds |
| Google AI Mode | +21% | +45% |
| Google AI Overviews | +12% | not measurable |
| Gemini | +12% | no effect |
| Perplexity | +10% | no effect |
ChatGPT is the most sensitive: it reads Maps, often adds «reviews» to its web searches and reports rating and review count next to the names. For ChatGPT, reviews and rating matter more than for the others: more in how to rank in ChatGPT.
What I saw in ChatGPT’s answers
In the study’s first collection I read, one by one, the ChatGPT answers that showed review counts next to the names. The businesses it recommended had a median of 159 reviews, and none had a rating below 4.8. That fits the model: for ChatGPT, rating is the strongest factor of all.
For comparison, my own profile had one review in October 2026: that is the under-10 band, where AI engines barely see you.
How to get more Google reviews
The method that works is simple: ask every customer, at the right moment, and make it easy.
1. Create your Google review link or QR code
- Open your Google Business Profile.
- Select Read reviews.
- Select Get more reviews.
- Copy the link, or download the QR code (the QR code can be generated on desktop only).
The link takes the customer straight to the review window: no searching, no extra steps (Google).
2. Ask at the right moment
- Right after the job, while the customer is happy and remembers it well.
- In your thank-you message or email, with the link.
- On the receipt, the invoice or a QR code displayed in your shop or office.
- Ask everyone, not just the customers you think are happy: asking only them is against Google’s policies.
3. Reply to all of them
Positive and negative, calmly and on the merits. Future customers read the replies, and a well-kept profile is more convincing.
4. No shortcuts
Discounts, freebies or prize draws in exchange for reviews are against Google’s policies, and buying reviews is illegal in the US and the EU. What you risk, and how to get fake reviews removed, is in how to remove a Google review.
Reviews are one factor; the others (categories, services, website) are in the Google Business Profile guide.
Google reviews FAQ
How many Google reviews do I need?
At least 10, ideally 50 to 200. In the study of 1,353 profiles, those with fewer than 10 reviews were cited by at least two AI engines in 9% of cases, those with 50 to 199 in 33%, those with 200 to 999 in 41%. The advantage grows up to about 200 reviews, then stops.
Is a 5.0 rating better than 4.8?
What counts is clearing 4.8. A 5.0 does no better than a 4.8, because 5.0 profiles almost always have few reviews. A 4.8 with many reviews beats a 5.0 with few.
How do I create a Google review link?
In your Business Profile select Read reviews, then Get more reviews: you can copy the link or download the QR code. The QR code is generated on desktop.
Can I offer a discount for a review?
No. Google bans any incentive in exchange for a review, and in the US the FTC rule restricts incentives tied to a review’s sentiment.
Do reviews matter for ChatGPT?
Yes, more than for the other engines. In the study, for ChatGPT every doubling of reviews was worth 37% higher odds, and a rating of at least 4.8 tripled the odds of being cited.
